Frequently asked questions
I cover the entire area shown on the “Our Service Area” map. In areas outside of that I have contacts that that I can recommend, and the Watertank Cleaning Company is a nationwide network of individuals like me.
You will most likely need your tank cleaned if your tank or water smells “off” (even a little), if you cannot see to the bottom or material is covering more than 90% of the bottom or particles are coming through your taps. Needless to say dead animals in the tank are a definite hint and persistent stomach upsets particularly in children or the elderly should be a warning sign to check the tanks.
Some “authorities” say that drinking water tanks should be cleaned every 2 years regardless. In my experience every tank is different and should be constantly monitored. I will make a recommendation for every tank I clean and set a date as to when the tank should be checked. I will even send you a reminder to check it!
There are a number of methods available, but my preferred method is the use of Liquid Chlorine. I calculate the amount that is required and add it to the water after removing the rubbish, debris and other contaminants. It is used up in the process and any residual disperses quite quickly so there is no lingering chlorine smell such as town water can often have. For those who do not wish to have chlorine added to their water I can use a different product, Davey Aquasafe, but it is more expensive.
Tanks can be cleaned either full or empty. If full there will be plenty of water left after the process is complete but if there isn’t much to start with there won’t be much left at the end. Some water is needed to clean the tank and pump the dirt etc out.
No! Unfortunately, some people let the water out to “help” me or to “save money”. The more water there is in your tank when I come to clean it the better the result and I don’t charge by the volume of water but by the capacity of the tank regardless of how full it is.
I usually spend around 2 hours on site to clean the average 5000-gal (22,500 ltr) tank, but every tank is different and so is every time.
The cost of cleaning a tank depends upon its size, not the amount of water in it. I determine the size of each tank on the day and charge accordingly to be sure I am paid for what I do, and you don’t pay for more than you get done. The location of the tank i.e., the distance I have to travel also affects the cost. I try to keep the travel costs to not much more than the running cost of my vehicle and if possible, group work so that the cost of travel can be shared and minimised or in some cases eliminated entirely. Then on top of that I have to add the GST - thank you, Mr Taxman! ☹ In most instances I can give you a price over the phone after asking a few simple questions. The price I give you won’t have any little hidden surprises in it and any additional work that may be needed or wanted can be quoted separately and completely obligation free.
I offer some discount when more than one tank is cleaned on the property at the same time, and this may be in the form of reduced travel costs or a reduction of the cleaning charge for the second and subsequent tanks. I always try to go a little easier for age pensioners.
It is not necessary for you to be there when the tank is cleaned provided, we can clearly identify which tank is to be cleaned. Of course, you are quite welcome to watch the process if you like (and have a strong stomach!)
Payment can be made by cash, cheque, direct credit or internet banking. Unfortunately, I cannot process card payments at this time.
